“The mix of musical lyrics, sensitive dialogue and thoughtful stories effortlessly blend with the mesmerisingly enchanting illustrations to allow us to venture into the cultures and wonderments of the people, creatures, and our own imaginations. Magic Fish Dreaming is a book that will engage the reflectors, the adventurers and the poets in all of us.”

Extract from  The Succesful Delivery of Magic Fish Dreaming by Mel Irvine

Arriving back in Estancia after more than two months in Australia and one of my first visits was to the family of Jerry’s best friend. I had a small bag of gifts from Australia including a Koala plushie and the wonderful Magic Fish Dreaming.

June Perkins, my friend and author of Magic Fish Dreaming arranged almost one year ago to share her wonderful book here with some of the kids and June, if you are reading this, they truly love it. Success!

We drank pepsi and ate little packets of biscuits and the kids looked through their bag of bag of gifts.

“Isda, Isda” (Fish, Fish) sang their squeals of delight.

“Grabi” (Wow) cried out six year old Roseanne and her little brother Nilson (four), turning the pages of wonderful illustrations. What a joy to photograph their candid delight.

Magic Fish Dreaming heads to Sacramento, United States

June – day before reading at Riverbend and receiving the following message

I presented “Magic Fish Dreaming” to the Courtyard Private School in Sacramento. They were thrilled and there was much discussion about the package. So many oohs and aahs could be heard in the administration offices.

The posters will be framed and hung in various locations including the library.

Someone read the poems aloud as the others listened. Your book was so loved by the staff!

And I’m a hero for donating to the school. I will do a follow up in a few months for additional feedback.

Well done, June!! I am so proud to call you a friend!

I have just received the book. Splendid!

I especially love the illustration which depicts a joyful group of children with a young one in a wheelchair.  We seldom see this kind of integration in a children’s book, unless it is an educational book for disabled children. Here, we feel that he is spontaneously included in the group. Yes he has a handicap (a challenge), but yet, that doesn’t prevent him from being joyful like the other children, and with the children…
I also love the illustration with the platypus, this strange animal who looks at this splendid and perfect moon shining in the sky…
*Please note the book is not yet translated – they are reading it in English.

The Book Arrives

Delighted Young Reader!

I’m sitting my favourite chair reading Magic Fish Dreaming and dreaming about my childhood.

Jocelyn, Brisbane.

The precious parcel arrived safely and we’re delighted with the books, the kookaburra and all… You can be very proud of this publication. One of the extended family was visiting yesterday. She was in Year 4 this year. She started reading and ignored the conversation. I asked what poem she liked the most…it was ‘Beyond Caterpillar Days’. 10 year old Bronson’s favourite poem is ‘Geckos’ Dance’

To our dear friend June. Thank you for Magic Fish Dreaming. We love it. To me it is evocative of the days we spent living in Koala Park and our cat bringing cane toads onto our bed at hot days and the balmy evenings with no long sunset…the night noises of the Queensland critters! Eva loves the poem Magic Fish Dreaming. She has asked me to tell you this! Helene the illustrations are beautiful and compliment the poems magically. We are so happy to have this book in our lives, June and Helene. It was a special extended birthday for Eva when it arrived. xxxxxx

Hi June,
The book looks so gorgeous! Just beautifully done, from the writing, to the design, to the illustration. It’s not just a professional-looking book, but an exceptional one. I’m so happy for you both.
I look forward to seeing your writing career blossom, and I really think self-publishing this book was a good step for you. But be patient and persistent.

–Jed USA (June’s mentor for the kickstarter)

Writing and illustrating a book is the first creative part of the project. Then handing your precious manuscript to a printer and a designer to bring their own expertise to the project gives the reader a book of wonder to behold. I’m so proud to be part of this wonderful project even in a very small way of reading the first draft over a year ago.

Had a brilliant time @ Magic Fish Dreaming – June Perkins and Helene Magisson’s Launch 30th October 2016. June Perkins, beautiful cultural soul weaves through her poetry with a voice entwined with cultural remembering, family relationships with each other and the natural world – bought to life with beautiful illustrations by Helene Marie Anne Magisson. June also shared a recording of one of her poems read in her traditional language by a friend, followed by a traditional dance performance and songs by her children.
And last but not least, the Cake – Edible Art and very yum indeed.
