Joining International Celebrations for Ridvan!

It was so delightful to be part of the You Tube Ridvan is Everywhere Celebrations online.  And a great honour to be the epigrammatic beginning to day 7 with a brand new never before shared poem.  This poem is now being included in the next issue of Tokens.

“The “Is Everywhere” Collective, which brought us this wonderful online Naw-Ruz celebration, is celebrating the Festival of Ridvan! They are excited to provide family-friendly programming for all 12 days of Ridvan and this video features their program celebrating the 7th day of Ridvan.

The Local Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’is of Los Angeles (USA) is sponsoring special program for the 1st, 9th and 12th days of Ridvan but every day in between features videos sharing poetry, storytelling, music, art, dancing, cooking, and crafting—all by friends from across the world!

You’ll find the playlist for Ridvan Is Everywhere here on YouTube. You can also subscribe to their YouTube channel for updates.”

Magicfishdreamingcover3

An award winning poetic celebration and exploration of nature, people and imagination in Far North Queensland.

Encourages children and families everywhere to hunt for their own nature-based or urban poems.

“Luminous and jubilant, Magic Fish Dreaming explores an imaginative world of rainforest and cassowary, the flicker of geckos and the roll of quolls. Whimsical poems and exquisite images invite readers to venture into vibrant, magical places, rich with stories and legends.

Like the work of Michael Rosen and Shirley Hughes, images and words combine to evoke the textures and spirit of landscapes. Here, though, it is a vibrant Australian world readers discover, one alive with the colour and energy of nature and many cultures.”

Felicity Plunkett, Poet and Poetry Editor for University of Queensland Press

Videos Almost Done

Filmshort 74

I’ve been hard at work on the videos for during the kickstarter.

I decided to make a few short videos, and one that’s around 3 minutes.

This is partly due to people scanning through things so quickly on the internet you just need to make sure you have something that can say things in a catchy and short way.

Filmshort 67

It was interesting deciding the best way to show the images on film, and Helene sent me some videos of illustrators that she liked so I could study the editing style.

Filmshort 75

This was extremely helpful and gave me lots of inspiration to how to film her illustrations. So thanks so much for that Helene.  One of the things I loved  about the examples she sent me was how the camera pans and zooms could highlight the details within the picture and give the viewer an appreciation for the details in the art.

Filmshort 76

My colleagues at Children’s Book Academy looked over the video and gave me some constructive feedback as to how they felt the videos could be even better.

Writelinks buddies  continue to be a wonderful support, encouraging and inspiring, as many release and launch their own works.  I am so delighted at how excited they are about this book!

I thank all the faithful followers of the blog, facebook, and other spaces.  Helene, myself, Matilda and designers and printers, can’t wait to finally get the ball rolling. So close now!

A special thank you to Helene, David and my dear youngest son for their support in the filming of the footage for it.

You can find out more on the facebook page or blog.   Really now almost ready for lift off.  But until then, have a wonderful life.

When I was a Baby

Growing up Queensland
In the land of the cane, cassowary and crocodile.

Script Extracts

“When I was a baby my Mekeo grandmother, or bubu, from Papua New Guinea, would rock me in her arms and tell me stories.  My Mekeo grandfather, bubu, was a crocodile hunter.

But I didn’t grow up with crocodiles because when I was only one, we went to live in Australia with my Aussie dad on a cold but beautiful island called Tasmania: home of wild rivers, Tasmanian devils and the now extinct thylacine.

In my twenties I left Tasmania with my husband and by the time we had small children we were living near the rain forest and the sugar cane fields.

We were well and truly in the lands of the crocodile and cassowary, similar to that of my ancestor’s Mekeo homeland.”
